class 7

May, 3rd 2013
Topic: At the mall

Skill: Listening
This class was special because we designed the lesson without knowing who would be teaching each skill.  We selected the skill by taking some pieces of papers with the word written on it. I  liked this methodology, it gave a different way to make you realized that you have to be prepared to give a class even if you have not  planned it, just looking at the lesson plan. It is necessary to feel secure of what you will be teaching at that moment according to the circumstances.
This was the last lesson I taught. As it was the listening part, I introduced vocabulary related to places you find “at the mall.”  After introducing them, students listened to some sound effects of places at the mall. This activity should have worked better if I have not given the worksheet to students. Since the very moment students got the page, they knew they had to look to the activity and check the sounds, but in first hand that it was not the purpose, they should have listened and identified the places without looking at anything. So, some of them did not follow my instructions, because they were matching while listening.

 The post- listening was ok, since students did a good job. All the class was involved, students made a conversation in pairs, they presented, but at the same time the listeners had to pay attention to the names students performing mentioned.  If they heard his or her name, he/ she should stand up and go to the place where she/ he were in the conversation. However, there was a problem that did not allow this activity to be perfect if I can say it. The flashcard pasted around the class were too smaller to identify the place easily.  I know a have to work on this, and make the material appealing to students, so they feel motivated to participate and learn more.

  1. Hi Magaly.

    I would like to comment on your last activity. It was, as I read, a role played. In fact, we have previously studied that role plays are not very suitable for adolescents. Nevertheless, I would say that it might depend on the learners themselves. For example, I would say that the age is an important factor that affects this kind of activity because students might be willing (or not) to perform. In consequence, I consider that the most noticeable issue is compounded by both the cognitive and emotional development. Thus, I would like to ask you how did your role paly go…
